The 25th Moot court is finished..
A personal note on behalf of the 9th team of Leiden University:
This Moot was an incredible journey.. Seven months ago, we started a competition which brought us through several major European cities, which taught us what stress actually feels like and which brought us into contact with the most amazing people from the entire world. The journey is officially over, but we will definitely come back to Vienna in the future as part of the Moot Alumni!
We are very proud of the results we have achieved this year. The support of our coaches from Houthoff and our other sponsors helped us to achieve these results and we would once again like to thank them for this. Without them, we would not have made it this far!
Play hard, plead hard:

Leiden receives Honourable Mention for Memorandum for Respondent
The Leiden University team backs up its win in the Copenhagen Plesner Pre-Moot with an honourable mention during the Willem C. Vis Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna (23-29 March 2018). After an impressive win in Copenhagen, the team was awarded the honourable mention for their Memorandum for Respondent during the awards banquet. It is the first time after competing for nine years that Leiden manages to receive an honourable mention for Respondent’s memorandum.
The team wrote the Memorandum for Respondent in the first phase of the competition. During the final competition in Vienna (23-29 March 2018), the top 9% of 362 competitors received an honourable mention for the outstanding quality of their memorandum.
During four pleading rounds in Vienna, the team pleaded against the University of Canberra, Georgia State University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Ljubljana. Unfortunately, it did not advance to the top 64 knock-out rounds. Despite this, the Moot was a great success with valuable networking events and the aforementioned honourable mention!
Would you like to join next year’s team and score even better than this year’s team? Would you like to be trained by Houthoff’s best arbitration lawyers? Leiden University wins Plesner pre-moot in Copenhagen
On 8 and 9 March, the Leiden University team travelled to the office of the Danish law firm Plesner in Copenhagen for the Plesner pre-moot. This pre-moot is a pleading competition in preparation for the 25th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. The Moot is the world’s biggest and most prestigious competition for law students.
In a very close competition, the top-3 teams in this year’s pre-moot were:
- Leiden University (the Netherlands)
- University of Fribourg (Switzerland)
- University of Southern Denmark (Denmark)
The Plesner pre-moot was a great start and great practice for the team. The quality of the teams and arbitrators were both outstanding, making the 1st place all the more rewarding. The Leiden Team is looking forward to representing Leiden University in Vienna!
17 February 2018
In the previous weeks, we have been pleading at practice sessions and pre-moots several times. The team is steadily improving and arguments are getting increasingly tighter and better!
From 26 to 28 January, we had lots of fun at the International Pre-Moot of Amsterdam (‘IPA’). We learned valuable lessons for the future pleadings and even won the Party Award. Plead hard, play hard.. On Friday 16 February 2018, we were cordially invited at the Lydian offices in Brussels for a practice session against the team of University of Liège. The two pleading rounds were very successful. We would like to thank their partners and employees for arbitrating and supporting us in our journey to Vienna. Scheduled next are several other practice sessions and of course the pre-moot in Kopenhagen.
The fifth IPA at the offices of De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek was a great success!
